Arizona Climbing Guides Winter Weather Prediction

With the winter upon us in Arizona, it’s a good idea to get a big picture so we can plan our winter adventures. Regardless if you are in Tucson doing canyoneering, or in Prescott enjoying some rock climbing, it’s important to have an idea of the potential for winter weather. So, with that stated, here’s a few notes in regard to the long range weather forecast.

Winter 2024

      • We will have dry conditions

      • Warmer than the last few winters

      • A bad winter for drought

    What to Expect

Forecasters like Ryan Hall are predicting that we will have a dry and warm winter in Arizona compared to the last few. Part of this is due to shifting from El Niño to La Niña patterns, so the northern part of the country may take the main impact of the winter weather leaving Arizona without much in the way of cold or wet.

This will create a good season for outdoor recreation if you trust Arizona’s Weather Forecast. The rock climbing will be sunny, and the canyons will be dry. Of course predictions can be wrong, but so far it’s looking good for travel to Arizona

    The Good News

If you are planning a trip to Tucson Phoenix, or Prescott, you likely will have better than normal conditions. Many area canyons are easier and safer if there’s no water moving through.Areas like Prescott are much more comftorble when the temps are near 60f. So far, the short term models are supporting this prediction as well as the long term weather models.

    The Less Good News

Many are aware of Arizona’s long standing battle with water shortage. Given this forecast, it’s not looking good as far as relief goes. If you are planning a trip to LAKE POWELL, you might notice the water level continue to drop. Let’s hope for a big summer monsoon!
